Apple Galette ~ all the flavors of homemade apple pie with half the work! This quick and easy recipe is the ultimate fall dessert.

apple galette with one slice removed

If you’ve been following a while, you may think I have a thing for galettes. The fact is, I kinda do. This simple, rustic dessert looks like something you’ve been slaving over but is incredible quick and easy to make.

It has all the comforting flavors of homemade apple pie but with way less work. Who’s in?

What’s not to love about this time of year? Cooler temps, less humidity and I for one am grateful that bathing suits are no longer a part of our daily lives. Can I get an AMEN to that?

For this Apple Galette recipe I’m using a premade pie crust (I did promise quick and easy, after all). If you have a good pie crust recipe by all means use it. You can’t go wrong either way.

What is an apple galette?

A galette sounds fancy, like something Julia or Ina would make, but it’s actually just a simple free-form pie made on a baking sheet. It can sweet, filled with juicy peaches, summer berries or crisp fall apples like this one.

It can also be savory like this Tomato Galette that’s one of my most popular recipes right now. Making any one of them is well, . . . as easy as pie.

what’s in this apple galette?

  • apples
  •  granulated sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • cinnamon
  • butter
  • premade pie crust
  • all purpose flour
  • egg + water
  • turbinado or coarse sugar

Optional topping ingredients for serving:

  1. ice cream
  2. whipped cream
  3. caramel sauce

how to make apple galette:

I used a mixture of two Honey Crisp apples and one Granny Smith for a sweet-tangy flavor combo but you can any baking apples like gala or just one type if you prefer.

Preheat the oven to 375° then line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Peel, core and slice the apples about 1/4″ thick then add them to a bowl. Top with sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and melted butter then gently blend.

Unroll a single pie crust onto the prepared baking sheet then sprinkle the flour over the top, evenly distributing it.

Arrange the apple slices in the center of the dough overlapping them leaving about 2” of dough around the edges.

Fold the dough slightly over the edges of the apples overlapping each fold then whisk the egg and water together in a small bowl to form the egg wash.

Brush the top of the dough with the egg wash the sprinkle one tablespoon of turbinado (coarse) sugar over the crust and the other tablespoon over the apples.

Bake 35-40 minutes or until the crust is golden and the apples are tender then let it rest about 10 minutes before slicing to let the juices settle.

HOW to serve this dessert:

You really don’t need anything more than a knife to cut the galette plus a few plates and forks. However, whipped cream on top would be delicious as well as a scoop of vanilla cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce like you see in the photo.

Enjoy!
