Ingredients

Apple filling:

  • 6 large apples peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Crisp topping:

  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats not quick cooking oats
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter melted

Optional toppings for serving:

  • vanilla ice cream
  • caramel sauce
  • whipped cream

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an approximately 9 x 9-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon softened butter. Set aside.
  • Peel and diced apples. Add to a large bowl along with granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Give it a good stir to evenly coat the apples.
  • Transfer apples to the prepared baking dish spreading in an even layer. Don't wash the bowl - you can use it for the topping.
  • To the same bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in the .
    Melt butter, pour into the bowl and stir until combined. It should be crumbly.
  • Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples. Bake 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the edges of the apple filling are bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven. Cool 10-15 minutes and serve plain or with ice cream, whipped cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

Using a combo of apples makes the best flavor. My preference is honey crisp and granny smith for the ideal sweet - tangy flavor.
