Calories:
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt or same amount cottage cheese
- Optional: 1 egg for egg wash
- Eat plain or add any of your favorite toppings and seasonings
Making the dough/forming the bagels:
If you’re using Greek yogurt, add to a large mixing bowl. If you’re using cottage cheese, blend it in a food processor, blender or use immersion blender until smooth then add it to the bowl.
Add self-rising flour then stir until a shaggy dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour (about a tablespoon at a time). It should be slightly tacky but not so that it leaves dough on your hands.
Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead it several times until the surface is smooth and you can form a ball. Section the dough into 3-4 approximately equal pieces (depending upon the size of bagel you prefer).
Roll each section into a rope then form a circle and pinch the ends together to form the bagel.
Air Frying the bagels:
Preheat the air fryer to 350° for 3 minutes and lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
Whisk egg in a small bowl. Brush the top and sides of each bagel with the egg wash and sprinkle with your favorite bagel toppings.
Transfer to the air fryer leaving a little space between them. Cook 10-12 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Cook time will vary with air fryers and the size of the bagels. You don't have to flip bagels over during cooking.
Tip: if you're using cottage cheese, I recommend blending it until smooth before adding it to flour using an immersion blender, standard blender or food processor.
Bagel topping ideas:
- Coarse sea salt
- Everything Bagel Seasoning
- Sesame seeds or Poppy seeds
- Cinnamon and sugar (add to dough and on top)
- Onion flakes
Store uneaten bagels in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or air fryer for a few seconds or slice and toast in the toaster.
Freeze leftover bagels in a freezer safe bag up to 3 months
